A tooth that fails to emerge or fully break through the gum tissue is impacted. The most common impacted teeth are the third molars or wisdom teeth. Most people have four wisdom teeth, but each can be at different stages of eruption and position. Through evolution our jaws are getting smaller, therefore, most people do not have sufficient room for the third molars. Before determining treatment, Dr. D'Amico will perform a complete exam including a panoramic radiograph.
Wisdom Teeth Cause These Potential Problems
pain, inflammation and infection of the surrounding area
permanent damage to or crowding of adjacent teeth
formation of tumors or cyst which can destroy large portions of the jaw
Depending on your examination findings, Dr. D'Amico will recommend either removal of the wisdom teeth, close follow up or discuss other options. Removal is the most frequent treatment for problematic wisdom teeth. Early removal (usually in the teen years) or before problems develop is recommended to decrease the potential for risks and complications. Dr. D'Amico can remove your wisdom teeth in his office with sedation, for your comfort. The Good News is: Once removed, wisdom teeth do not grow back!
