Oral Pathology, Newark DE and Middletown DE
The Christiana Center for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery P.A. – Newark & Middletown DE
The inside of the mouth is normally lined with a special type of skin (mucosa) that is smooth and coral pink in color. Any alteration in this appearance could be a warning sign for a pathological process. The most serious of these is oral cancer. The following can be signs at the beginning of a pathologic process or cancerous growth:
- Reddish patches (erythroplasia) or whitish patches (leukoplakia) in the mouth.
- A sore that fails to heal and bleeds easily.
- A lump or thickening on the skin lining the inside of the mouth.
- Chronic sore throat or hoarseness. Difficulty in chewing or swallowing.
These changes can be detected on the lips, cheeks, palate, and gum tissue around the teeth, tongue, face and/or neck. Pain does not always occur with pathology, and curiously, is not often associated with oral cancer. However, any patient with facial and/or oral pain without an obvious cause or reason may also be at risk for oral cancer.
We would recommend performing an oral cancer self-examination monthly and remember that your mouth is one of your body’s most important warning systems. Do not ignore suspicious lumps or sores. Please contact us so we may help. If a biopsy is needed, Dr. D’Amico III, Dr. D’Amico or Dr. Kosa can usually take care of it in just a few minutes in the office using one of his state of the art surgical lasers.

Patient Review By Kelly M
I could not have asked for any better of an experience. Dental visits in general cause extreme fear and anxiety. I was put at ease and received explanation of everything that was going to happen with the procedure performed. I would highly recommend this group.

Patient Review By Cathy P
Dr. Kosa and his physician assistant were attentive, kind and comforting. They explained everything slowly and concisely. I was especially happy that during the consultation, I asked Dr. Kosa to go ahead and do the biopsy on the bump on my tongue, and he removed it a few minutes later so I didn't have to come back a second time. During the follow-up appointment, he checked that my tongue was healed and thoroughly explained the biopsy results. I was extremely happy with the level of knowledge and service I received. Thank you to everyone at the office.
